Not knowing they must be connected to the GlobalProtect VPN before accessing Proxmox
-
Not knowing where to find the server IP address and login credentials
-
Browser warning errors such as “Your connection isn’t private”
-
Unable to proceed past the unsafe SSL warning
-
Confusion about which Realm to select on the login screen
-
Concern about the “No valid subscription” pop-up after login
Background
Proxmox is the virtualization platform Ensign Tech Labs uses for student VM assignments.
Because Proxmox servers are protected behind the college network, students must connect to the GlobalProtect VPN before accessing them — even when using home Wi-Fi.
All required login credentials and Proxmox server IP addresses are provided through Canvas → Modules → Course Resources.
When accessing Proxmox through a web browser, students will see a security warning because the servers use a self-signed certificate. This is expected behavior, and users may safely bypass the warning.
Once inside Proxmox, students will reach the node assigned for their course and begin managing their virtual machines.
Solution
Follow these steps to successfully log in to Proxmox.
1. Connect to the GlobalProtect VPN
You must connect to the VPN whether you are:
-
On campus
-
At home
-
Using personal Wi-Fi
Open GlobalProtect and connect to the Ensign Tech Labs gateway.

2. Locate Your Proxmox Server Information in Canvas
In Canvas:
Go to Canvas, and look for an announcement or email from your instructor with the IP address and credentials for Proxmox access. These credentials will be used throughout the semester.
3. Enter the Proxmox Server IP Address in Your Browser
Open your browser and type the server IP address into the address bar.
You may receive a warning from your browser saying the connection is not private. This is normal and expected.

4. Bypass the SSL Warning
When you see the “Your connection isn’t private” message:
-
Click Advanced
-
Select the link that says “continue to 192.168.224.__ (unsafe)”

This will take you to the Proxmox login page.
6. Dismiss the Subscription Warning
After logging in, you may see a message:
“You do not have a valid subscription.” or something similar

This is normal — just click OK to proceed.
7. You Are Now Logged Into Your Assigned Proxmox Server
You will now see your assigned node and available virtual machines for the course.
